Frankfurt

The population of Frankfurt is around one million. It is the fifth largest city of Germany in terms of population after Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, and Cologne. It is situated on the river Main (a tributary of river Rhine). Its area is 248 square km.

 

Frankfurt is one of the main cities of Germany. Its official name is Frankfurt am Main, meaning that it is situated on the banks of the river Main.

 

Frankfurt is one of the cities with very good quality of life. It is known as the happiest city.

 

The city is the financial heart not only of Germany but also of the whole European Union, playing important role in world economy. It's been a major banking city ever since the Rothschilds opened their first bank here in 1798. Frankfurt also has a leading stock exchange. The stock market at Frankfurt is very famous. It is very large and is considered among one of the largest stock market buildings in the world.

 

It is home to the European Central Bank and many other banks but it also have thousands of companies, including the moguls of the German publishing industry, as well as a number of companies involved in public relations, marketing, media and telecommunications.

 

The citizens are called Frankfurters.

 

No other European city has so many skyscrapers like Mainhattan - a nickname referring to the exciting skyscrapers and business style. During a major event of Frankfurt, the Wolkenkratzer-Festival, skyscrapers are open to the public and spectacular laser and fireworks shows highlight the buildings at night. Frankfurt is also known as 'the most American city in Europe'.

 

The Opera House, in which cultural programs are held, is known as very beautiful. It was damaged during the second world war. After 1981, it was renovated.

 

The annual wikimania conference, related to Wikipedia, was first held in Frankfurt in 2005.

 

The largest cargo airport in Europe is at Frankfurt. Frankfurt is also a major communications and transport centre, it is well known for its airport, the second busiest one in Europe (after London Heathrow).

 

The Frankfurt zoo has more than 4500 animals and birds. It is located in an area of 13 hectares. It is the second oldest zoo in Germany.

 

Frankfurt contains forest within the city. The forest area is 80 square km, around one-third of the city’s area. The forest contains plants belonging to tropical, dry, and polar climates.

 

Frankfurt occupies an important place in the ancient history of Germany. The coronation ceremony of the kings was held here.

 

Hot dogs is the snack liked by many people. The birthplace of hot dogs is Frankfurt.

 

On the southern side of river Main, there is a Museum District. Many museums are located here. The museums related to European nations are also located here. Arts belonging to Asia, Africa, North America, South America numbering above 65000 are available in museums in Frankfurt. The most famous museum is the Senckenberg Natural History Museum.

 

As for the weather, Frankfurt's climate is continental. The summers are warmer and the winters can get very cold. June and July are the wettest months and the highest temperatures are in July and August. It is recommended to visit the city in autumn, or in spring.
