The Great Pyramid of Giza

The great pyramid of Giza is situated in the country of Egypt. Its height is 481 feet. There is a city called Giza in the country of Egypt. There the great pyramid exists. It is one of the wonders of the world. It is built with large stones. It is very ancient monument. But people will wonder at the sight of this.

The first monument to be recognised as the wonder of the world is the great pyramid of Giza. It was built around 3800 years ago. Means in that age, the pyramid of Giza was the highest monument standing on earth. This is also the largest of the pyramids in Egypt.

The great pyramid of Giza is special because even now with the advanced technology, a replica of the pyramid could not be created. In that age, without the availability of advanced technology, construction of the monument of this size is really special.

The official name of the Great pyramid of Giza is the Khufu Pyramid. It is very ancient. Emperor Khufu was one of the kings that ruled Egypt. The pyramid was built for him. Before Khufu, the pyramids built for the earlier kings were with stairs on the outer side. It is believed that Emperor Khufu has asked for a pyramid that looks smooth on the outer side.

First, two pyramids were built to the specifications of Emperor Khufu. But they were not liked by him. Hence, the present pyramid was built.

The stones were brought from a quarry at a distance of 800 km from the pyramid site. These stones were transported through boats in the river Nile.

Around 30000 slaves were used in the construction of the pyramid. It took 20 years to build the pyramid of Giza.

Around 2.3 Million stones were used for building the pyramid. Among them, there were stones which weighed 2 tonnes to 30 tonnes. Its basement is spread over an area of 600000 square feet.

In olden days, Egyptian kings believed that even after death, one requires money, gold etc. They believed in life after death. Therefore, after death, while burying the corpse in the grave, they used to keep valuable ornaments and items which were favourites of the dead person.

Since the area is sandy area, animals used to dig the graves and carry away the items inside. Hence, pyramids were built to avoid animals digging the graves. 140 pyramids were identified in the whole of Egypt. Out of them, many were dilapidated. In some of the pyramids, the valuables were robbed long back. But in the Great Pyramid of Giza, there are no signs of the mummies.

There are only three chambers. One for the king, one for the queen and one grand gallery.

It is built to withstand heat and earthquakes. The inside temperature is 20 degree Celsius.

Alongside the Great Pyramid of Giza, there are some more pyramids, and very big idols of gods which look like lion. All these together are called the Giza Pyramid Complex. It was believed that Emperor Khufu built the other pyramids around the Great pyramid for his other wives.
