Budapest

Budapest is one of the most significant cities in the world on account of its role in shaping the fate of Europe in modern times.

 

Budapest is the capital city of Hungary. It is also the largest city in Hungary. In 1873, three cities: Buda, Pest and Obuda merged together to form Budapest. Its population is 1.7 Million people. Its area is 525 square km. Budapest is known as the “Queen of Danube” since it sits on the bank of the river Danube. Owing to its cultural and political significance and its strategic geographic location, the city of Budapest is also sometimes called “the heart of Europe”.

 

The city has two parts. Buda and Pest. These regions occur on the opposite banks of the river and are connected by a series of bridges.

 

Budapest contains 40 theatres and 100 museums.

 

We all know about rubix cube. It is one of the toys liked by all. The inventor of the rubix cube, Rubic, belongs to Budapest.

 

Budapest is situated on the Danube river in the magnificent natural setting where the hills of western Hungary meet the plains stretching to the east and south. Budapest contains many hot water springs. This city is also known as the “city of baths”. It is believed that taking bath in the natural hot water springs will reduce many diseases. These are known as medical baths. For these baths, people from faraway places are coming to Budapest.

 

There is a children’s railway in Budapest. It is not a toy train railway. It is a real railway line. From ticket examiner to signal operator, enquiry officer, all are children. This is intended to teach the children the duties of various railway officials. For this, children will be trained for a period of four months.

 

The neo-Gothic Parliament, is the biggest building in Hungary with its 268 metres length. The Parliament building at Budapest is the third largest Parliament building in the world. It contains 691 rooms, 20 km lengthy staircase. This building is of 315-foot height.

 

The subway line at Budapest is one of the world’s oldest subway lines. It started in 1896.

 

There are many monuments in the city that catch the attention of tourists. The Aquincum Museum, the House of Terror, another historical museum, several churches, castles and festival sites are places of great interest. The city is also known for its parks and gardens.

 

Budapest has many monuments which are recognised as world heritage sites by UNESCO. Buda Castle Hill, China Bridge, Hero’s Square etc. are such world heritage sites which are famous tourist spots.

 

Senior citizens of Hungary can travel in government transport services like Metro, Bus, etc free of charge.

 

The Zoo at Budapest is one of the oldest Zoos in the world. It was started in the year 1865. There are around 10000 animals belonging to more than 1000 species.

 

Yearly in the month of August, music festival is held with much fanfare. Thousands and thousands of people attend this festival.
